Oprah meets Smart Start Inc.

Recently on a show about victims of drunk driving Oprah and MADD talked a little bit about ignition interlock devices.  They even showed a video of our unit being used!  Maybe we will see other celebrities with our product soon.  (Paris Hilton?)

Transportation Safety Conference

Another Kansas Transportation Safety Conference is in the books.  Who would have guessed it was such a popular event for school children?  (They were actually on the other side of the building for a different event.)  The Century II convention center proved once again to be an excellent venue, and the turnout was excellent, at least on the first day.  This event is put on annually by the University of Kansas continuing education.  If you weren't able to attend this year you should definitely try to make it next year, there is alot of excellent speakers and plenty of professionals from every area of the transportation industry.  Not to mention you will get to see me, and yes I will answer the question, "What is that some kind of breathalyzer for your car?"  :)

Kansas Transportation Safety Conference

Smart Start of Kansas will once again be attending the Transportation Safety Conference.  This year it will take place at the Century II Convention Center in Wichita Kansas.  It will be April 17th and 18th.  There will be several sessions including one on new Kansas laws, including changed DUI laws.  If you can make it stop by our booth and say hello.

Spend the night in jail, or a motel?

Holly Kabler and Christy Barnett have made it possible for first and second time DUI offenders in Douglas County Kansas to trade their jail time for a "weekend intervention".  Their company is C.H.A.T.S, for Christy and Holly's Assessment and Treatment Services.  Kansas requires first and second time DUI offenders serve 48 hours incarceration, complete a Drug and Alcohol Evaluation, and attend alcohol education classes.  C.H.A.T.S satisfies these requirements in a 48 hours lock-in at a local motel.  Participants check in on Friday at 5:30 and remain 48 consecutive hours during which they receive 26 hours of Alcohol Education, and their evaluation.  The benefits to a program like this are endless, not only do the offenders get to avoid jail time, but satisfy three of their requirements.  Participants say the program is educational, helpful and even fun!  The best part is the program is totally offender pay, meaning less crowded jails and no cost to the tax payer.
